The most inspiring TED talks serve as amazing food for thought for all. I’ve chosen the 7 TED talks for travelers. TED is community and a place online, where you can find speeches on just about any topic there is.  Some of the speeches are informative, some funny and a lot of them are authentically inspiring. And so I sunk into other people’s presentations trying to select a few that I could share with you guys. I found an urbanist, talking about squatter districts in different cities, a very touching story of a woman, who managed to escape from North Korea, a guy who went to the North Pole by himself… Talks that inspire to travel and make you understand our world a little better.

DIVE INTO BIOLOGY

This is how teaching by entertaining is supposed to look like. David Gallo is talking about the intriguing creatures that live underwater. But not only talking – he is showing them to us on the screen. Check out for yourselves, what you can see in our oceans and get inspired to go scuba-diving in at least one of them.

TAKE A LOOK AT OUR FUTURE

Robert Neuwirth gives a presentation on why he thinks that squatter districts of cities like Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai, Nairobi and Istanbul are going to define the future of our civilisation. Understanding how people live there will most probably make you want to see at least one of them with your own eyes.

READING IN CHINESE IS EASY

It wouldn’t be me, if I didn’t try to sneak in some language knowledge. This one is for all of you, who are planning on going to China or are interested in learning Chinese. ShaoLan Hsueh is presenting an easy way to learn reading a couple of basic words written in Chinese. The movie is double i: Interesting & Informative.

WHO WAS THE MICHAEL JACKSON OF DICTATORS?

Travel to the world’s more ‘edgy’ locales has always fascinated Tony Wheeler – the founder of Lonely Planet. His talk will certainly make you think about what this means through his stories from traveling along George W Bush’s ‘Axis of Evil’ for Bad Lands and the lessons he’s been learning from his recent Dark Lands travels.

SOMETIMES ESCAPE IS THE ONLY OPTION

Some stories are really difficult to hear. But they will make you realize, how lucky you are to be living where you live. Hyeonseo Lee tells the story of determination and luck that helped her to escape from the North Korea. Definitely worth watching to understand the horrifying reality of people living in totalitarian regimes.

PICTURESQUE ROME

Those of you, who have already been to Rome, will probably agree, that this city is definitely worth seeing. And there’s something about David Macaulay’s presentation and his drawings that will make you wish you were in the capital city of Italy right now. Even if you’ve already visited it 8 times.

EXPLORE THE POTENTIAL

“More than 2000 people have climbed Everest, 12 people have stood on the moon; including me only 4 people have skied solo to the North Pole.” With these words Ben Sanders Starts his story. A story about how he managed to get to the North Pole all by himself. A truly passionate and full of humor presentation about the audacity to go places where it is almost impossible to survive. And the guy wasn’t even 27 when he did that! INSPIRING!

Best for last? I think so. Anyway, there are more where that came from, so if you ever find yourself bored or  in need of motivation, TED is actually a place to be with new videos coming almost every day. And new videos mean new stories. Stories in which I sunk for a looong time. And I believe you will too.
